Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located and what are your rooms like?

My therapy room is located in the centre of Durham in a Community Centre called Alington House. I have use of a room that has wheelchair access. Please let me know if this is needed.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is called the initial assessment. This is where I ask lots of questions to make sure that I have a good understanding of the issues that you are facing and what you are looking to get out of the work. It lasts around an hour and can take place either face to face or online. This can give us both an opportunity to get to know each other and to see if we feel we will work well together and that I have the skills needed to support you. After the initial assessment if appropriate we will talk about our work together and then start the work. I offer a reduce fee for the initial assessment of £30.00. Please either phone, email or text to arrange an initial assessment.

I think that we need couples counselling, but my partner is not keen, what should I do?

It can be difficult when one of you wants to get support and the other is not keen or concerned about seeking help. Please get in touch with me and ask any questions that you might have. Try and talk about it and find out what the concerns are. You could always book in a free 15 minute consultation together to discuss these concerns further.

How do I decide on a counsellor?

It may seem like a really difficult decision about who to choose to work with. I believe one of the most important things is that you feel comfortable and you feel like you are able to trust the counsellor. It can also be important to acknowledge that building up a positive relationship and trust can take time, especially if you have had your trust broken before. I hope that the difficulty in deciding does not prevent you from getting the support you deserve. Some counsellors, myself included, offer free 15 minute consultations, so you could speak to a couple and see which one you can relate to more.

What hours do you work for Turning Tides Therapy?

I offer face to face and online appointments on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9.00am - 7.00pm.

How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions that you will need will depend on the issues that you're facing and what you want to get out of the counselling work. I offer long and short term work and can usually tailor the work to the amount of sessions that you can afford.

If you have any further questions that have not been answered please get in touch.
